Cian McLoughlin is a 26 year old, Dublin based artist.
An architectural graduate, he went on to study for a masters in film studies in UCD. Since then he has dedicated himself fulltime to painting. He has followed in his Mother's footsteps, herself an accomplished artist, and concentrates on portraiture and urban landscapes. Though he is reluctant to talk about his own work, he does tell of the effect a study trip to Florence has had on it. It was there, as a 16 year old, he first saw the slave sculptures of Michelangelo and Donatello's Mary Magdalene that would have a profound and lasting influence on his painting. He also finds particular inspiration in the self-portraits of Rembrandt, the late works of Titian and the work of Whistler. Since graduation Cian has already exhibited widely in group shows in Kerry, Belfast, Derry, Wexford, and Dublin. His work has been profiled in the Irish Times ('Artist of the Portrait' Sep 2003). A self-portrait was hung as part of the annual RHA exhibition 2004. He is currently working on a series of portraits for the Samuel Beckett Centenary celebrations in 2006. To date, the sitters have included the actors Barry McGovern, Johnny Murphy, Lee Evans and Michael Gambon.
